I’m a German citizen, but have never lived there and am thus not eligible to vote. AfD getting 20% is scary. But I’m grateful that Merz has said his coalition will NOT include them under any circumstances. So the coalition will be the same, just a different Chancellor. I see no other way for him. Half of his own party would join a no confidence vote if he were to let AfD into coalition, and in the resultant election CDU would get clobbered. That’s my read, at least.

Germany requires radical reforms (rearmament, strengthened EU, abolish the debt brake), and as long as the established parties remain too ossified to tackle this, the AFD will continue to grow

FPÖ is basically Austrian AfD. They've had no functional coalition for months. My spouse is there. My home is there. I am still in California until they sort themselves out.

Coalition building is rough. The hope for Germany is that CDU and SDU end up with enough to just have a two party coalition, which makes excluding extremes easier. If it also has to include the greens, it will be the same as last time but less stable than with just two
