Agreed. Apparently, I'm told this is a knee-jerk and puritanical response and I'm not allowed to judge authors, only what they produce.

The idea people can't judge authors on their behaviour and shape their reading habits or social habits (if they're also creatives) accordingly is wild.

It's not like there aren't enough authors around for there always to be other options.

Quite alarming when he's the editor of a renowned magazine. There are no ethical uses of AI in art. 🤷‍♂️

I *know* there are some readers and fellow authors who will not engage with me because of how I behave and what I say, and that's entirely fine, that's their prerogative. Some of them have told me to my face.

It would be aggressively entitled for me not to believe that.

Every major generative AI tool out in the wild, from ChatGPT to profile pic generators, is built off the mass theft of the work of authors and artists without consent or compensation.

You simply cannot use them and still claim to have respect for the people who created what fed the machine.

If you use an AI generated profile picture, if you use AI generated images to promote work, if you talk about using ChatGPT in your writing - you will get blacklisted from many creative spaces & be given the cold shoulder by creators.

It's nearly 2025. Ignorance won't work as an excuse for long.

I completely agree, but as a reader I'd add that it holds us in contempt too, assuming we'd be perfectly happy to read that kind of insipid slop.

So... I sit at a keyboard, type words, pull them together into a semblance of coherence, and use a photo I took as a cover image.

Using AI is like pulling on a runner when climbing: you cheat yourself, as well as all the others.
