This is reflective of a common dynamic in the developed world: as established media (with at least some attachment to journalistic values) loses reach & influence, the wild west of social media takes over, people get less informed & more angry, & authoritarians start winning.

Of course the conclusion of VSPs from all this is that the party of informed people should *apologize* for losing the loyalty of the ill-informed. It should indulge in endless self-criticism, reform itself top to bottom, ritually abase itself. The party of the ill-informed? Doing great, no notes.

I think this puts the opinions about "tech was the left's ally before the left betrayed tech" into stark relief. Facebook lied about video format and was an otherwise bad actor. Twitter sold to fascism. They moved fast and broke the institutions that allowed them to build things in the first place.

This has been my hobby horse for a while. People are not naturally equipped to intelligently select from the fire hose of information thrown at them and default into a conspiratorial mindset, which bad actors have thus far been better able then more honest sourcesto manipulate.

Can anyone name an email newsletter which is pretty down the middle but informs someone of the day's news accurately. Takes 10 minutes to read, maybe. And it must be free. I just want something to recommend if someone says it's too much work/time to be informed.

I really like her! But a low information voter probably won't read it. I just checked and apparently The Morning by NYT is free. I get that lefties/liberals don't love it but I think it's fairly down the middle and doesn't take too long to read. Maybe that is the one I should recommend.
