Responses to this post reveal that lots of people have not given more than a few seconds thought to how AVs are going to affect cities. I guess I should do a pod on it.

I think the story of people exiting some big event in LA and calling for so many AVs that it created a gridlock situation none of the AVs could extricate themselves from and so they had to send out real humans to unlock the AVs and move them manually might be instructive.
Don't forget to talk about how AV safety features can actually increase risk. They won't run over someone in front of them, for example. Great, right? Except people can harass AV passengers (esp. women) by standing in front of robo-taxis and not letting them move.
I was behind a Waymo that stopped in lane of traffic that's a 90degree turn. Incredibly dangerous. Enough people honking at a human driver would get an idiot to move. The Waymo just sat there.
Will listen to your pod on it. 15 minutes in - this video is crap so far. Lots of FUD. Shifts to problems of congestion in general - apply to taxis, Lyft, Uber. Cherry-picking few accidents auto-driving has. Nothing on that these are ELECTRIC cars. Yes on CONGESTION & COST. Beats taxis though.
Congestion is a concern, BECAUSE it is such a superior mode of travel as a consumer experience. Everyone, once people get used to it, will want to travel this way. How many cars would that be? And pricing - once it stops being subsidized - will go up, as it did on uber/lyft.
Ughh. I haven’t read this yet, but I certainly hope not. On the merits of cabs/uber/lyt/waymo, Waymo is BY FAR the best consumer experience. Without a doubt. I’ll read this later to see how accurate, but as an experience, it feels” like the future. And is amazing.
