I don't mean to minimize violence against women in the US, which is a massive problem, but this is an example of a misleading headline causing misunderstanding. Homicide is _a_ leading cause (greater than obstetric causes). Drug/alcohol use and car accidents kill more pregnant women than homicide.

High rates of death from alcohol/drugs and car crashes say messed up things about our society as well, of course. And the US has much higher rates of maternal death from medical complications than do countries with comparable wealth, mostly because our society treats Black women so terribly.

Everything you have said is incorrect. Car and auto accidents are included on death certificates as peripartum if it happens in this window. But homicide is absolutely the leading cause of traumatic death in US. See also Luster et al https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37489421/

What % of maternal deaths are due to homicide? If homicide is a leading cause of death in pregnant women, how many other causes was that compared to, 3, 5 or 20? The leading cause can vary depending on how many categories were considered.
