The SNL 50th anniversary special was frequently good and sometimes very bad. Just like the entire history of the show!
(Also, I wish they had featured cast members from before the late nineties a little more, but maybe they're too old and tired.)

British sketch shows seem slicker & more punchy, SNL sketches feel a bit predictable.
Little Britain, Smack the Pony Armstrong & Milller, Not the Nine O'clock News & Monty Python are far better.
Some of SNL's longtime appeal is the performers who went on to become big movie stars later.
Python was def variable.
Agree - SNL is a great training ground for future films.
Smack the Pony was intersting - it was an all female cast.
