Besides everything else: I am a parent of a seventh grader, I spend a lot of time with seventh graders. Seventh graders are not amoral monsters! The best protection for teenagers is a general respect for bodily autonomy of exactly the sort he is undermining.

I’m 53, so about a decade younger than Rahm Emanuel. But not even counting Tennessee, where I spent my early years, schools today are vastly more enlightened than they were then. I don’t think anyone our age who is honest about their own childhood and has any contact with kids today can deny this.

In nice suburban Maryland, where I went through middle and high school, it’s true that there was no paddling or bible verses at the start of each school day, as in my Tennessee public elementary school. But bullying and physical fights were routine and expected.
