“If you had to guess the leading cause of death for children and young people around the world, what would you say? Malaria perhaps? Pneumonia? Suicide? They’re all high up there, but no, it’s road accidents.”

I don't think we're talking enough about the fact that the pressure to remove DEI from science means women die.

Just a reminder that fascists, authoritarians, dictators of all stripes destroy archives— books, museums, databases, &c— because those things provide windows onto a plurality of other ways we might organize the world. And so preserving, defending, and spreading that knowledge harms those regimes.

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

You're saying the billionaire's operation is like an octopus? An octopus? Huh, where have I heard that one before?

Glaciers provide stable melting water to a very large % of all farms in the entire world. When (not if) we lose this stable, slow, dependable glacier melt water, our food system will collapse.

Federal career workers: We appreciate you and your work. You don't deserve this mistreatment. Here's a file with lots of resources if you are facing illegal termination. docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

How many federal workers would DOGE need to fire to make up for Musk not paying his fair share of taxes? Answer: 677,000. That's 44% of the entire non-DoD federal workforce. Again, this power grab is not about the budget. It’s about politics.

Build #soil. 💪

Not just the highly educated. Welsh miners formed study groups to read Austen and Dickens. Scottish shepherds built lending libraries. Watchmakers & cabinetmakers taught themselves Greek and Latin. The loss of working-class autodidact culture is one of history's great tragedies.

Our inability to imagine big numbers is going to kill us all.

All my life I have studied democratization and autocratization. My 1st field trip was to newly democratic Argentina. I then added autocracies to my portfolio: Cuba, Ven, etc. I think I can recognize the stages of transition to authoritarianism. Here are the boxes Trump has already checked off.

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

I follow French politics a lot, as many of you know. Any effort for mass layoffs of public sector employees there would create such huge strikes and marches, the level of disruption and paralysis would be biblical.

1. OSHA has ordered the digital and physical destruction of 18 publications on workplace safety practices, according to an email obtained by Popular Information. The email says the publications have been removed from the web and tells staff that physical copies should be "disposed of or recycled"

I'm starting to think DEI may have been the only reason so many planes stayed in the sky...

Here’s a question for @jasonfurman.bsky.social & other partisans of cost-benefit analysis: in computing the optimal staffing level for the FAA, how do you value the economic cost/benefit of people being afraid of flying/unafraid to fly?

"Next time you find yourself wondering 'Where are all the protesters?', please think about what you might not be seeing and why." New blog post from me on the big disconnect between media narratives about protest activity and actual protest activity.

Among everything else, what a shitty fate, to have national systems of support dismantled by two men who have never once changed a diaper.

"There was a hope, fueled by liberal myths, that if enough peaceful people took the streets, the regime would become frightened and collapse. But the reality was much less romantic." Highly recommend this case study to folks thinking about strategy and tactics for US (and elsewhere) now.

what god made him shark

When Trump was sworn in, Elon Musk's corporations were under more than 32 investigations conducted by at least 11 federal agencies. Most of the cases are now closed or likely to be closed soon, and the federal agencies are being defanged by DOGE. Funny how that works, huh?

What these nihilistic vandals are doing to dismantle science & medicine—generations of expertise & public service & life improving benefits—is cultural revolution level national self harm. No foreign foe could inflict such brutal damage & senseless suffering on US so fast & effectively & unresisted.

If Toronto can do this for suburban driveways, we can do this for pedestrian intersections and transit stops too.

Plutôt que des fleurs et du chocolat.

Need a break from the otter nonsense? 🦦

Possibly the most overlooked of climate change impacts: damage to crops, and potential food shortages and starvation. A factor that will amplify existing armed conflicts and drive new ones over the coming years.

"tRump's seasonal hiring freeze and total elimination of the visitor reservation system will spell disaster for Yosemite National Park (and other NPS units) -- "efforts to protect the park’s ecosystems for future generations are being derailed." 🌏

We looked at the death schedule and talked about how most of the things they died of are prevented now by vaccines and clean water and today we have a HHS secretary who wants to take us back to the deaths of 1850
