Canada faces revolutionary change. It may sound staid, but we urgently need something on the scale of a Royal Commission to *finally* figure out our options and choices.
Right now we’re not so much acting as reacting, casting about, not fully understanding where we are and what we’re doing. 🧵

I was arguing to a friend yesterday that now is the time for a constitutional convention to fix certain bugs that are holding us back. Renegotiate the allocation of taxes, jurisdictions, etc, with the aim of optimizing incentives and execution for a new era where we will need to grow big & powerful

I like the idea in principle but have doubts re: feasibility. Constitutional politics in the 1980s + 1990s did not end well. But we can accomplish key institutional + policy reforms "below" the level of constitutional change, and I agree: this process should engage stakeholders in a meaningful way

Do you mean in terms of long term actions? Asking because there hasn't been any in my lifetime, so I've no experience with them, but the major initiatives that might be similar - the TRC, for example - has left me kind of cynical about if they would work and if we can implement them.

Yes - the Rowell-Sirois Commission was important for the formation of the post-depression/ world war two order, the Macdonald Commission facilitated its replacement with a more market-oriented order since the 1980s.
