Most of what was said there sounds pretty wrong to me. Let’s say I have a “friend” that’s worked in the VA for a long time. This friend knows that there are a lot of VA employees that monitor efficiency and productivity. Programs like OPES and MCA and VERA (Veterans Equitable Resource Allocation)…

These programs exist to ensure tax dollars are not wasted and resources are used as thoughtfully as possible to take care of veterans. Money isn’t thrown into a black hole. It’s used where it is needed the most. As far as probationary employees, all that means is the person is new to that job…

The employee hasn’t done anything wrong, they are just new to the role (less than a year). You could be a fed employee for 6 years and just moved into a new job with better pay 10 months ago and be probationary. My friend also says they had a coworker who was fired much like the vet in this story…

They received an email saying they were fired and their supervisors were not aware and the coworker was locked out of the system within a few hours. If the supervisor doesn’t know their employee is being fired, how can they file for exemption ahead of time?

Totally bass-ackwards. Indiscriminate firing of staff before evaluating the processes is a sure fire way to absolutely hobble the system.

It will take years and billions of dollars to fix it.

A Board of Trustees where I worked in 2017 indiscriminately fired 4 or 5 staff members from one office. Since they failed to research what those staff did, and the work still had to be done- it was split up and distributed to other staff. This didn’t work out well.

Moral among staff is the lowest I’ve ever seen it. Hard to concentrate on your work when colleagues are literally crying for confusion and fear of job loss. More staff calling in sick due to distress.

The PACT Act made many more vets eligible for care so we do need more staff! When patients are sent to community because of low VA staffing, the quality of care suffers, there is less oversight and higher costs. This impacts facility budgets that result in limited hiring.

I haves work for the VA as a clinician for over 10 years. Even “exempt” staff feel unsafe & are looking for new jobs. The firing of probationary staff means it will be very hard to backfill positions when the fed gov feels like an unstable place to work.

The progress on the backlog for claims to benefits is public record. Dramatic decreases even with the swell of PACT ACT claims. Record setting amount of claims processed for the last three years. Each year better than the last.

DT fired the VA OIG who oversees and ensures the agency is focusing on the mission. Collins is a figurehead that is repeating the DT'S talking points. The memo that went out from the VA COS is not a review but a direction to cut out those jobs.
