Is there a reason to do this rather than have your whole phone encrypted and off during crossings? Can they force you to unlock it?

As of a couple of years ago, they could not force you to put in your code to unlock your phone but it was less clear from a legal standpoint whether they could force you to use your fingerprint or Face ID. I don’t know where that stands now.

If they have “probable cause”, whatever that means, yes. But there’s limits as to what they can do once it’s on.

Also I assume they can clone it or other nefarious things that don’t require the device being on but that I don’t actually understand
