Great time of year to take Red Osier Dogwood Cuttings. You can often find them in wet areas along ditches, ponds, etc. I like that they don't require rooting hormone or much preparation. Will root in almost any substrate/soil. I also like that I can plant directly as live stakes. - ThreadSky

Red osier has been used for hundreds of years from making baskets to bindings and even jewelry and clothing dies. Widely used by native american indians. Very strong and flexable.

Ah, I only seem to have silky dogwood, though I probably need to give a more thorough look around to see if there are osiers too. Was still thrilled when I spotted the red branches. I suppose I could take cuttings of those too, but they seem to be pretty abundant here.

Great tip. Will follow. Red twig dogwood catches light and holds snow in striking ways in a winter garden. For small gardens, there is a smaller cultivar 'Arctic fire.'
