Designed using best practice and principles straight out of the CROW Manual for Bicycle Traffic, the route features a five-metre width for safety, underpasses for directness, shade trees for comfort, and a bespoke light fixture (inscribed with the words “all roads are connected”) for attractiveness.

Construction crews are now hastily completing the project, as the Beijing Mayor himself is scheduled to cut the ribbon (and ride it) in mid-May. We should see it as a clear sign Chinese policymakers are gradually seeing the humble bicycle not as something to aspire from, but something to aspire to.🔚

I've lived in Amsterdam and then Beijing and was surprised at how poor the bike infrastructure was, and how few bikes you saw. This was in 2001-3 so I'm glad to see the change.
