Ugh, every option we voted on was a convoluted mess. I don't care if that's how they do it in Ireland. A *straight* ranked ballot, like how every major sport award is voted on, is a proven method to deliver the most accurate result.

If he had moved forward with proportional representation instead of his Alternative Vote, things might be different. Researchers had concluded: not only is Alternative Vote more disproportional than first-past-the-post, the most pronounced effect would be to deliver more seats to the Liberal Party.

Norway, New Zealand, Iceland, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Ireland, Switzerland, Netherlands are good examples of PR implemented properly. There are some countries, like Israel, that have a form of PR that is a nightmare.

Reportedly there was fierce *internal* fighting between PR and RB (i think he favored RB) and he backed down on the promise in order to restore party unity

They didn't give themselves very much time to come to a consensus in my recollection. Also, I'm certain the committee was made up of members from various parties. For this reason, I don't buy the "for the sake of party unity" narrative.

Horsefeather! His promise was only a maneuver to get elected. More than 105 000 signed a petition for proportional representation not ranked ballot! The goal is undistorted representation not what flavour of the month you prefer. @fairvote.ca

At the time I was under the impression that the NDP & Greens were adamant about getting PR, the Liberals were for RB, and the CPC wanted a referendum knowing that 2 previous referendums had failed because people wanted to stick with what they knew.
Personally RB seemed the best transitional option🤷🏼‍♀️

I'll take ranked ballot over FPTP but it still has the problem of playing to the middle and not really standing for anything. A government full of second choices isn't exactly inspiring.
