You will still be able to read them, but if you buy new books, or in this case subscriptions, and send them to your Kindle via email, you may need to update you subscription. Sideloading by downloading your computer and plugging your device into it? You can still use .mobi

Also, Calibre can convert your old .mobi files to open epub files.

I read a lot of fluffy gay romance, where indy authors often join up to do promos/giveaways ("here try a free novella/book 1 of a series to see if you like my work") through BookFunnel and this came up there a while back.

This is why I used Calibre plug-ins to strip off the DRM from Amazon books for as long as I could, and when they broke that I stopped buying ebooks from them and started buying them from Kobo and https://ebooks.com.
