My theory: Bilbo's hobbit-hole is also an ICBM base, with rocket-launched nuclear missiles loaded in the back pantry, ready to be launched through the front door at Buckland should the territorial integrity of the Shire be breached.

It's not ballistic if launched horizontally. Probably a terrain-following cruise missile to stay in the ground clutter under the Barad-dur/Orthanc detection window
You'd need an impressive launch velocity. I think this ties in with my "hobbits live in re-purposed burrows" idea. They've taken up residence in the launch tubes for a now-forgotten strategic weapon - something like the V3 gun at Mimoyecques
