the anti echo chamber argument is always "you need to hear viewpoints that are different than your own" but then the viewpoint presented to me is "hey guys what if we sent doctors to prison for helping women not be pregnant anymore"

Midwits want the block feature so they can avoid the “impolite” question of whether Russel Brand is a coward for saying “the n word” instead of the actual n word
I can turn on literally any news channel or go to any site and hear awful things I don’t agree with. Where are the people saying this getting their news
It's the absurd implication that we have to be available to have our thoughts challenged at whatever time they deem necessary... I'm here to look at animal photos and talk with fun people. If I wanted a debate, I'd go looking for it. My time is not theirs to allocate.
Also, how many people do you think have cast aside long-held viewpoints thanks to a few well-crafted skeets flung across the internet. Maybe this is not the right medium for those kinds of discussions.
The echo chamber argument is also implicitly "you have no other venue to access information except the one we are both on now, there is no other and even if there were you are too enfeebled to find them now listen to my white replacement screed"
I think that's because we only hear the final resulting outcome. But there's a whole world and value model leading up to it. It has weirdly adjusted weightings, and probably a wrong factual assumption here and there, but would be actually enriching to learn about and engage with IMO.
I would let them use lube because I think it would be for all intents and purposes just as painful but much messier and consequently even more demoralizing.
Echo chambers are bad and you should hear different viewpoint, but you generally have to intentionally seek out interesting snd novel views for it to be worthwhile. the views that get blasted at you like that are typically ones you’ve both heard before and are kinda insane.
Also they assume that the only way to have a different viewpoint is to have different values. I listen to ppl who are further on the journey I want to be on and it isn't always comfortable.
I listen to Catturd2’s podcast sometimes and nobody is missing anything by not having to hear his thoughts, he seems deeply ill, has no charisma at all, and has difficulty getting a joke out without stumbling over it

I’ll keep an open mind and manage my time so I don’t have to spend it listening to assholes
I love a different view that is coherent, reasonable, and well articulated
But I don’t have time for assholery
The value of listening to someone who is telling me that gay people are groomers is so negative that mathematics struggles to describe it.
It’s not an eco chamber IMO
Its called being healthy
I adore different opinions that are reasonable, thought provoking, or wildly different from my own
So long as they are healthy & sincere
Hateful propaganda isn’t healthy and blocking it isn’t unhealthy
Psychological safety is important
We cultivate the experience that is good for us. It’s irrelevant if it’s not good for the people who wish harm on us.
curious
It's not a sentiment embracing free speech, it's a sentiment embracing authoritarianism.
