I learned to fold the American flag in Scouts. It turns out it's a very convenient way of folding plastic grocery bags to save as trash can liners. I've probably folded more plastic bags that way than flags
One of the things I most remember about the post-9/11 period is that flags were added to almost everything including styrofoam takeout containers and plastic bags so I was just constantly seeing American flags in the trash.
