Little Ume, our endangered tapir calf, has loved meeting so many of you over the past two weekends! 🩷 This growing baby needs lots of rest, so she’s been catching plenty of zzz’s behind the scenes and in her habitat. 😴

The tapir reside in South America and South East Asia. That is amazing. The two land masses have not been connected for 250M years. That amount of time should have left them different.
Quite appropiate the name for the time being😅 Ume (or haur) means child in Basque and kume an animal offspring, tapir kumea for example. She is so lovable, so cute 💘

Years ago at the ok city zoo it was reported a zookeeper had their arm ripped off by a tapir- all these many yrs later I just can’t understand how that could ever happen or why?! They seem so docile & not threatening! ??
they havve incredibly strong teeth meant for breaking down tough plants, and they're pretty heavy creatures as wwell. like many animals, most of their weight is dedicated to muscle. id reccomend going down a rabbit hole of tapir research, rabbit holes are always fun!
as always, it's important not to be blinded by anthropormorphization (or humanization) of animals. tapirs, like all wild (and even pet!) are just as capable of violence as they are for gentle love.
