Tbh I never thought about how similar some squid could be to cuttlefish, what are some of the main differences between them that can be observed without having to cut one open? (I know some internal structures are part of the differences)
They do look similar, they both have fins that appear to go all the way around, but they’re visually distinguishable. The fin on squid connects all the way around the mantle, but the cuttlefish has 2 fins, one on each side. The eyes also look different, but are both W’s which is def confusing.
It’s not GETTING confused that pisses me off, that’s super understandable, it’s being confident in correcting a woman on her own area of expertise without taking a pause and thinking “hey maybe she knows better than me”
Also I'm not seeing the cuttlefish having 2 fins and the squid having 1 going all the way around. Did you maybe say it backwards or am I just not able to find a good angle photograph to see it from?
Some cuttlefish are long and skinny though so this is another one of those rules that usually works. It’s really hard to make strict rules to tell them apart! You just look at 100 pics of each and then…know?
Doesn't matter, in the end some dick with a molecular PhD comes along and tells you everything you learned is wrong and every genus you thought you knew is wrong... I'm not bitter or anything....
I'm just imagining explaining squid to a doctor of squid knowledge and wondering about the choices they had to make to end up living such a sad life that they're so invested in never being wrong. How do you LEARN? And you're so NICE about correcting people! I thought your bobtails were cuttlefish!
the amount of times people would walk up to the reef squid display at monterey bay aquarium and go "That's a cuttlefish" as if the sign didn't say squid

OK, Sarah, but this is the LAST TIME.
Asking them to tell differences in orders of cephalopods is really too much… 😁
Or is it ManPaining
Maybe manpaining is the result of mansplaining….
I'm not sure if that makes a whole lot of sense but after looking at a good amount of pictures it becomes an easy way to differentiate between them.
I think it was Hawaiian bobtail squid that they were insisting were cuttlefish that time, but still, it was the same audacity.
