"Checkmate" derives ultimately from a Persian term 'Shāh Māt', which means "the king is stumped/helpless" probably as an Arabic corruption of the Persian word for "died/defeated", 'mata'. So it's supposed to be "your king is defeated" but actually means closer to "your king is confused".

Dude Jewelry. Made some for friends tonight to test run on arm hair. Yeti friend reports no hair pulling. Success.

Lack of apartment soundproofing is a perfect example of how capitalist infrastructure neglect & corner-cutting has a useful side effect of keeping the working class fighting each other because they can't get a moment's peace & lateral aggression's always easier than holding the powerful accountable.

Fun fact: Charlemagne lived before Europe's Genetic Isopoint. This means that literally every white person alive today is a descendent of Charlemagne.

I was at a punk show in 83 where a skinhead jumped up on stage and gave a Nazi salute. The bass player hit him with his bass, knocking him into the crowd and 150 people collectively hauled his ass out of the venue and threw him in the mud. This was the right and only appropriate response.

Header image in context is hilarious: it's a leech busy feeding on the back of a human hand.

saw someones bio on here and it made me remember part of this, a classic

The rediscovery of Metasequoia was like finding a living Triceratops. The world has seen so much change since the Late Cretaceous, but the dawn redwood’s still here.

Little Japanese Cedar is starting to shape up after resetting branches back to new buds. Once they've established a bit, I can shorten them all and then let them get dense foliage pads. Then, a lower profile pot. 🌱🇳🇿 #Bonsai

somebody in line for Jungle Cruise talking about "it just makes SENSE to audit the 150 year old Social Security people, who could have a problem with that!" and my husband LOUDLY and cheerfully said "YOU ARE SPREADING DISINFORMATION. ITS OKAY TO BE WRONG IN PUBLIC THOUGH." I love him very much.

After a month or so of playing BG3 I've today learned that the voice of Wyll is Theo Solomon, who did the audiobook narration of my novel RENEGADES: HARROWMASTER. Which is pretty cool!

"I know there's food here!!!" [via Yogyo Aquarium] Video: Pufferfish bonking their open mouth against the transparent lid to their tank. Resting on the lid, directly above the fish, is a container of fish food.

Light skin is likely a product of lower vitamin D levels in farmed food and lower light conditions. White Supremacy: a mythology built on mistaking a high-gluten diet and clouds for the will of God.

For every $1 the IRS spends auditing the top 1%, it can collect $13. For every $1 the IRS spends auditing the top 0.1%, it can collect $26. Laying off 7,000 IRS employees (during tax season) isn't about efficiency. It's about making it easier for the rich to evade taxes.

People with bearded dragons - where are you getting decor/tank supplies? Sophie needs some stuff, Chewy isn’t cutting it nor are Petsmart/Petco. 🦎

> “Loneliness we think of as being a very human quality or a human emotion, and we oftentimes think of fish as maybe not having emotions or not needing as much stimulation,” Waltz-Hill said. “But fishes experience curiosity and need enrichment just the same way that humans do.”

Still too cold to see many spring bloomers. But here's a skunk cabbage! This is an aroid of wetland forests and it can generate its own heat. It prefers to keep its flowers around 20-23C even if its below freezing. It can respond relatively rapidly to temperature changes of just a degree or two.

Today would've been Kurt Cobain's 58th birthday. I've always loved this sign as you enter Aberdeen, Washington (where he was born)...
