Any US requirement demanding Birth Certificates as some suffrage gold standard for identification is misguided at best. In addition to the disenfranchisement of others mentioned above, it additionally opens up an ugly can of worms for many, many, US adoptees.
Ask any stepchild.
Ironically, the more educated (and less likely to vote GOP) that people are, the more likely they are to be able to have that. I do not agree that disenfranchisement of 60% of the electorate is a good thing however. It could be used selectively to further split the electorate.
This is bullshit, when is enough, enough? We’ve gone along with the ID shit, and driver’s license, now you want us to bring a passport or a birth certificate? GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!
I had to get a real id in Illinois but they wouldn’t let me because the name on my birth certificate didn’t match my current id or ssn card. So I had to go back with a copy of my marriage certificate. The kicker is I had been divorced for a couple years but hadn’t gotten around to changing my name.
They made States implement an enhanced driver's license. Applicants had to present birth certificates, passports, SSN, etc. I am not going through all that again to register to vote. They already have everything. I am guessing Musk has it all now, too.
Going through that to get a passport right now. I need my name on my DL to match my name on my birth certificate. I didn't know who I was marrying when I was born. 😭😭😭😭
It's a pain in the ass. I'm in Ohio, so they make you have to show your whole line to your maiden name in order to get a compliant ID/license. Had to bring BC, first marriage license, divorce papers, second marriage license. Hubby changed his name BITD, & he had to bring his name change papers also.
Well I agree this is a problem, and a bad idea. It's also a problem that only 51% of the US population has a passport and it's a no doubt a contributing factor to why they're in the shit they're in. That percentage is even lower in red States.
Even if this got passed, disenfranchising women who got married because their last name changed when they have a marriage certificate would be a violation of due process. The law would be unconstitutional. Whether or not the GQP would care, is another issue…
Even if they allow you to also bring your court documentation of name change, many might not have that. People need to get all those documents now before you need them. I didn't have some of them for my DL and it took months to get them, so long that I had to re-take my driving test.
As an election worker who has registered and validated voter registration information, this is an absolute waste that provides another hurdle for voters. Every State already has a verified voter registration database.
I have a friend who probably won't be able to vote anymore because something on her birth certificate was screwed up 75 years ago.
She voted for Trump.
More voter suppression, as an American I value the voice for the voter or the shit rules they give not to process….. at least 3.5 million legally cast ballots were not processed.
Jumped through a bunch of hoops to get my California Real ID. Waited months for a copy of my Birth Certificate, long waits at the DMV. If there's no choice and SAVE passes, start now, start early, and get your docs together. I'm also starting on passport as backup. We've got to vote these MF'ers out.
70 million women voters losing the right to vote is a very serious insult to the country. These people propose so many outrageous ideas every day. I wonder how female red hat enthusiasts who are married and would be affected by this idea to remove their voting rights might feel about this right now?
