My husband, an hour ago: I think I want to go to that concert.
Me: Ok. You gonna go?
Him: It’s gonna be like an amazing party. Loud. Small venue.
Me:
Him: Like a big, awesome party.
Me:
Him: A party.
Me: You’re not going.
Him: Definitely not.
AGREED. Also someone who wakes up around the same time as you. It is terribly lonely to spend a Saturday morning waiting around while the spouse sleeps til noon, you may not realize it until you hook up with someone who doesn't.
I have pretty much perfected the Irish goodbye. Although my grown sons call it "mom's goodbye" as in, "the party was boring so I pulled a mom's goodbye."
Or someone who cares if you want to leave. My life will look at me, know I am ready to go, and do all the pleasantry stuff of excusing us.
Just as effective I think
We know a retired couple who use a designated word to signal that the husband wants to leave a party. But he doesn't give a sh!t anymore, so he'll just look at his wife, and say, "Banana" and we all know what it means.
Sadly, it turned out that *both* of us liked to be the last to leave!
But at least we'd have each other to be consoled by, later that morning, as we tried to face the daylight ...
I have a dear friend who will buy tickets to something like next to the stage at Depeche Mode and tells her husband and he says “can’t you just take Ryan?”
I love a good party. I just want to have the option of deciding not to go at the last minute. I have to be in the mood!
I have social anxiety, though, and when I force myself to go to these things I usually am glad I did. That initial reluctance tends to dissipate once I'm actually there.
My boo is a social butterfly, me not so much and I’m old enough to know which parties to skip. For the most part she’s fine with that and will let me know when she wants me to go so sometimes I just suck it up cuz it makes her happy.
