Generally, Republican administrations stop work on OSHA heath standards. Under GW Bush, OSHA issued only one health standard, for the carcinogen hexavalent chromium, only because it lost a suit by @publiccitizen.bsky.social and a federal court required it. 2/

After the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, we started work on a standard to protect healthcare workers from airborne and skin pathogens (OSHA already had a bloodborne pathogen standard). The proposed rule was scheduled for Oct. 2017, but the Trump team stopped work on it. 3/

The #COVID-19 pandemic was a disaster for workers; many thousands died following workplace exposures. Had that OSHA standard been issued before March 2020, it would have prevented many deaths, especially among healthcare workers. 4/

OSHA has recently proposed a standard to protect outdoor and indoor workers from extreme heat, but it will likely be shelved or weakened. This life-saving rule is badly needed; we should pressure the next administration to issue it 5/

Several states with their own state OSHA plans (CA, OR, WA, CO, & MD) now have heat standards. If OSHA does nothing, some states and local governments will enact protective laws & regulations. However, TX and FL have laws forbidding local heat regulations. 6/

What about inspections? Past Republican administrations have maintained OSHA inspection protocols and efforts, although often with lower fines, and shifting some resources to focus more on voluntary compliance. I think this is likely what will happen under Trump II. 7/
