The problem with this argument is that voters generally approve of many progressive positions when polled. It's not that Americans aren't progressive, it's that they don't support the politicians who either water down or fail to communicate those progressive positions well.

The all holy "Middle" that pundits and politicians glorify is nothing more than a euphemism for the status quo.
Politicans will talk about these positions on the campaign trail, and immediately abandon them once in office. They’re not delivering for the people.
