I find it quite astonishing, that due to the speed of light, the light of the stars in the night sky could be thousands or even millions of years old and that some stars we currently see in the nights sky are already gone.

For a Sci-Fi fact: If the setting has FTL travel you could arrive at that location and see the star already gone, while at the start of the journey it seems to still exist.

I play a game with my wife on clear summer nights where she points to a star, I find out which one it is and then how far away it and hence when the light we are seeing was sent on its journey. Use Wiki to look at the year and talk about all the history that happened live when that light was borne.

"The speed of light" is a misnomer. It should really be called "the speed of time". If you turn around from your dead star and look back at Earth with a powerful enough telescope, you'd get to see what we were up to in the past

The infamous Xenomorph in Alien was played by a Nigerian graphic designer by the name of Bolaji Badejo. Was the only time he ever acted - never wanted to be an actor, he was a (fellow) designer, so turned down the chance to play the role ever again. (And sadly died all too soon just 39 years old)

I remember as a kid understanding that light would go round the world 7.5 times a second. And that the light from the sun took ~ 8 minutes to get here. All I kept thinking was if it’s THAT far away how hot it must be when you’re very close to it. Blew my young mind. Made me feel satisfyingly small.
