I normally think that genuine apologies should be accepted. However, this doesn't feel genuine and I don't get any sense that he understands how he was offensive.

Incidentally, I think that genuine apologies are undervalued and can be helpful. IMO they should be given quickly & freely, without caveat/condition, and owning that actions/words for which you are apologising.

Rather than redress the balance by withdrawing the comments and simply apologising for what he’s said, he does it by trying to restore his reputation by looking for sympathy - I said it because everybody was giving me such a hard time over things. He’s never going to actually do the decent thing.
