I also remember it being much easier. I think I beat the game boy color version in a day whereas the N64 version took me almost a week.

I guess it's closer to a remake/demake? It's the same story, just more of it. Same setting, plot and characters, more dialogue.
And some of the magic and leveling was rebalanced.
