Well, it was almost a year later and these screens don't have the battle octagon, are still using the old UI/HUD and the day night cycle was pretty pared down after this
Thatβs why I like you. I get a like for my jokey-joke, but I also get a neat little glimpse of the actual history behind Quest 64. I would have never noticed the difference in the HUD for example.
I remember being so excited to get issue 100 π what a time to be alive! Wish I still had my old copies, I was subscribed for a long time. Donated most of them to the library one year when I moved, I think.
I don't usually nitpick the order of these lists because they are so trapped in the moment.... But I will say that that's one of my personal favorite hockey games of all time
(I own a lot of hockey games lol)
I guess that's ultimately the problem with a lot of these early attempts at "Top [X] Best Games Ever" lists. But they are fun to revisit for historical purposes.
Any attempt really has the same problem, it's not like games are getting "worse"
Games like Elden Ring, Baldur's Gate 3 and Astro Bot probably make a lot of these lists if they do them again this year
You know, now that you mention it, I was looking at the TV Asahi top 100 games list that they did a survey for a few years back, and they had Breath of the Wild at number 1, Animal Crossing: New Horizon at 4, Splatoon 2 at 5, and Smash Ultimate at 7.
But that does make for an interesting snapshot at a specific point in video game culture and context. I was actually comparing that TV Asahi 2021 100 games list survey with the Famitsu March 2006 100 games list survey results years ago. Seeing which games are still on the 100 list, and which aren't.
Or even what's held up beyond initial scrutiny. I'm sure a lot of "this game sucks because it's too challenging" NES/SNES games have been redeemed in recent years because players are simply better than they were in 1993, and games like Mortal Kombat that were all spectacle have waned.

Looks like they released shortly after this issue.
I kinda love how drunk on the N64 they were. Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey being better than TMNT IV: Turtles In Time is pretty great

A lot of my reading growing up was thanks to Video Game magazines lol.
Maybe not the βbestβ form of reading more often, but certainly better than not at all imo.
Most of my reading now is also video game magazines and guides or books about gaming.
I don't think there's any problem with it at all as I just view it as a means to interact with something I like without directly partaking.
Can't play games all day lol

I suppose recency bias will always play a factor
