People asking for FF to be turn based with all the same production values sans any gimmicks forget that ATB was introduced FF3 and just don’t acknowledge Dragon Quest at all
Like even outside of square everytime I see this convo again it legit just kinda eye rolling esp cause last year gave us some of the best ones in recent memory.
I typically just seldom acknowledge things like it that keep happening over and over since it seems like it just keeps happening no matter what and I've ran out of anything meaningful to say that I haven't already said.
I mean yeah esp cause whenever this discussion repeats it cause people not leaving their bubble for a series which I get but a certain point you kinda just gotta move on and look for something else. I did that and ended up learning I been missing out on stuff like infinite space which I really liked
Yeah, some things I really like, people kept saying not to give the time of day. I owned Castlevania 2 and Mega Man 2 on Game Boy before the internet existed, so I knew AVGN was just overreacting to be funny, and not surprised Rushjet1 proved GB2 has good music that's just an octave too high.
Plus I actually got bullied as a kid for being into videogames, but now I'm pretty sure a lot of those same people are now gamers. I guess it was a blessing in disguise teaching me that popular sentiment is often just wrong/flawed/uninformed.
this is just the whole online arguing meta, nothing but strawman memes. no way to come in with some nuance without feeling like you're siding with dickheads on either side
people who didn't like octopath 1, please give the second game a chance. it improves on nearly everything the first game slacked on and makes a far better case for the open-ended structure. plus yasunori nishiki's soundtrack work is once again phenomenal
Well yeah, but my thought was like, they're saying it won't sell when square makes one, but one of the best selling series in the world is that thing, so them thinking square can't sell them is silly
All of those games combined got less dev budget than the markting campaign for ff7 "remake".
And a lot of those games are just as bad as the ff7 "remake". It's just the Octopath team that produces any quality at that company.
For what it's worth, the game company still needs to make the menu combat fun and balanced. I loved Fantasian for the first half, but after level 35 battles that could last upwards of 10 minutes and rewarded you with basically nothing for your time.
I do think some of the issue is SE churning these games out with little fanfare and wondering why they don't sell when the majority of people don't even know they exist.
A lot of those games got no marketing before release. Maybe a trailer in a Nintendo Direct at best. Sure, those complaints happen but I doubt those are why they weren't successful. Too much quantity.
It's a case by case basis in terms of marketing but numerous times a SE game would come out and months later people would say "That released?" and these are people locked in and caring about this stuff
I mean isn’t triangle strategy like a strategy game? I dunno, it is turn based sure but my brain has always separated games like this and fire emblem from like ff5 or something
i've legit seen someone on gamefaqs (i like reading the forum threads to laugh at the stupid idiots on em) say that bravely default don't matter because they're not big name games so, consider that.
i can't say if everyone championing exp33 by tearing down ff has that mentality BUT.
if anything, Expedition 33 took less influence from Final Fantasy and more influence from the Mario RPGs (specifically Super Mario RPG and Mario & Luigi series) and Legend of Dragoon. with a dash of Dark Souls.
This past year has been such a surprise though. New game, great remake, release of a remaster and a surprise free DLC for Vampire Survivors. Only thing that sucks is we’ll have to wait years for anything new but what an amazing year it was.
You think a game with an entire soundtrack made by Revo and Linked Horizon is low budget? Just because it doesn't have photo realistic graphics on the fucking nintendo 3ds?
Ok? I think you have an interesting idea of “low budget”. You’re talking about the difference between AA and AAA. “Comparatively” was never in the equation to begin with, the reality is that these are all stellar games that people pretend never existed.
Your implication that these games aren’t taking the genre seriously are a massive insult to some of the best games in the genre in the last decade. You’ve clearly never played them.
It is square themself that does not take them serious. They underbudget them and don't market them at all unless Nintendo does it. Which is why Octopath 2 sold so much less than 1 despite being even better in every facet.
Have you considered that the disinterest in these games might be because they're not as stellar to some as you think? Or is that just not a possibility for you? You don't need to tie your valuation of a game or your taste in games to sales numbers or other people's opinions.
I would have loved FFT Switch but Tactics Ogre and Triangle Strategy felt kinda bland.
They just lacked the charm drawing me in like FFTA and FFTA2 did.
I'm not sure I get your point.
It's the same team, so both games so I have to like them the same?
They're different games, with different stories, character designs, music etc.
Just like a band can make a great album and the next one sucks even though they didn't change their lineup.
I still remember the "turn-based design was never ideal, it was just a compromise for worse technology; nowadays turn-based only fits for freemium cash-grab mobile games" claims circulating before Persona 5's release
"Is [new turn-based game] SAVING turn-based combat?!" *Me making an insane and grotesque face, pointing to a jpeg of Gustave, an arrow and the word "Amazing?!" also pointing at him*
The history of video games is largely folklore at this point. Almost nothing is preserved in the mainstream, games news sources are crumbling again, and games come so fast these days you’ll blink and miss hundreds.
This is how you get an overwhelming amount of takes that get memed like this.
Did Squenix do, like... literally any marketing for any of these games? BG3, Metaphor, and Expedition 33 all had BIG prerelease pushes, but I just don't hear anything when a Squenix turn-based RPG launches
I like those games but they did not have the marketing push that Exp33, BG3 or Metaphor had.
Part of the issue with Square Enix atm is that they keep releasing a bunch of games but not giving them much marketing, leading to great games underselling or flopping entirely
This is an inherent issue with their mindset surrounding them. Big budget titles underperformed, thus the creation of these AA projects, and they get minimal marketing (I recall bd1 had decent marketing and as a result did fairly well) because of that mindset
Yeeeeep, I remember being around when it came out. Then Bravely Second and WoFF just kinda died despite that. Square's management is so awful I genuinely don't understand how the company has cheated death so many times
There were definitely parts where it got to be a bit much, especially early on. But overall the story was really good and the dialogue was compelling. Such a strange complaint
See I've been wondering if XII will likely be the end of the series, since both Sugiyama and Toriyama have put some of their work into it but have since passed away.
Like the one point I can make to the first one's favor is that Squeenix doesn't market their non-FF RPGs as aggressively as they do their Final Fantasy stuff so they're not *as* visible but even then it's goofy as hell
Comments
Literally pokemon
Not really reality based lol
Very silly
and they think it's Satan as a video game.
And a lot of those games are just as bad as the ff7 "remake". It's just the Octopath team that produces any quality at that company.
Which would explain why those were the last ones I played.
It's just every time another great RPG comes out we get the same discourse again, but louder lol
I've had fun seeing the contemporary appraisal of Oblivion Remastered as being:
1) a better RPG than Skyrim
2) a really bad RPG
>neglects to name one of the two FF MMOs
Preposterous
i can't say if everyone championing exp33 by tearing down ff has that mentality BUT.
my close friend's been loving it, im sadly busy in the backlog mines and like fucking about in private server kmmos and such
like, explain why it's bad.
it just says "wizardry" what the hell is wizardry
They just lacked the charm drawing me in like FFTA and FFTA2 did.

silly shenanigans
also, their "magic" was rushing games like Xenogears, FFVIII, FFIX, and many others out the window.
🔫🧚🏽♀️ Careful, you're talking real big for someone in x4 brave distance
This is how you get an overwhelming amount of takes that get memed like this.

"Why do you still watch/play old games like football? They're at least 100 years old. "
I bet tho people will noticed the change in art…
I also think the IP is way too lucrative for SE to drop it… I mean we have a konbini dragon quest themed here 😅
