Incredibly depressing. It's becoming crystal clear now that algorithmic echo chambers on social media are sadly far more influential than parents and schools. I have 3 small girls and rapidly turning into that most awful of things; a "concerned" parent. Feels bleak.
I think it is mainly "plummeting overall response rates", the same problem that is making half of the economic statistics unusable. weirdos getting disproportionately represented because they are the only people left who are happy to be asked about their political views.
yep. as I say, huge problem in all sorts of national statistics - the ONS is no longer able to produce reliable numbers on the labour force or producer prices - and seems a likely hypothesis extremists are getting over represented in surveys in the same way we know they are in low turnout elections
It’s not a thing @teachertapp.bsky.social - but we invented it precisely because we got ahead of the trend as DfE surveys weren’t working anymore. How the ONS has taken so long to sort (won’t be until at least 2027) utterly baffles me.
it's an unenviable problem that almost every stats agency has - part of the problem is that you really don't want to be making methodological changes because they break the time series

I remember backlashes but not such a retreat from egalitarian values.
