NEW BLOG: Managing attention in classrooms is a social justice issue hobbolog.wordpress.com/2025/06/02/m... #UKEd #Edusky #EduBlogUK

I've said it before and I'll say it again: any move to significantly reduce the length of the summer holiday can't get off the starting blocks unless there's also a plan to move results days somewhere.

The people who think students will find a curriculum based on workplace training more engaging should go into schools and deliver a drop-down day, leading sessions on writing an application, interview skills etc.

Once again for those at the back. *School. Is. The. Real. World.*

It isn't possible to design a school system where everyone leaves with the skills needed for the workplace because *they're all going to do different jobs*. Workplace training needs to be done by employers.

There's no better way to spend the last day of half-term.

Oversight of the school calendar isn't something any leader puts in their bio or talks about at conferences, but its impact shouldn't be underestimated and I've got a lot of satisfaction from trying to do a decent job of it. You certainly notice when it's not done well.

This wasn't the sort of thing I would normally read and I did wonder for a while if I'd made a bad decision, but I found it strangely compelling and by the end I was hooked. Still feel like it was one step ahead of me all the time though and not entirely sure what it was trying to tell me.

Focaccia's great fun to make with kids. Lots of scope for choosing toppings, poking things into the dough, glazing with oil, scattering on herbs etc. Thanks to @docrmills.bsky.social for making me think of it earlier in the week.

It should be the law that every cathedral has to contain a Lego model of itself.

Makes a change from tea and scones.

You might think you know how to make the best of half-term but I just replaced the ironing board cover.

Ciabatta's more of a faff than most bread I make so I only tend to do it in the holidays, but it's very satisfying.
