I can see I've got you tempted. The good news for you is there's still time.

Oh come on David! Where's your sense of adventure? Never mind dodging bullets, you could have been moved by the tale of a gorilla who was injured by one and became crazed with murderous rage, but underneath had a heart of gold and was just waiting to be shown some love.

I quite liked the main villain being disguised as a clergyman.

Oh my goodness! I have no idea how many times I re-read those as a kid!

Yeah I would agree. It's remarkable how the meeting almost always manages to take roughly the same amount of time regardless of the agenda, which suggests it's driven by habit and people adjusting their contributions instinctively rather than genuine need.

I'm not saying it's too much, just asking whether others have found ways to do it that might make it more effective.

Not at all. I was asking if others have found good alternatives.

On the shark's side?

That probably applies to quite a lot of things in LotR tbh. Like giant spiders.

Only if he can tell me whether Tom Bombadil would beat a shark at rock, paper, scissors on a cloudy Thursday in October.

So far I've resisted trying to kill myself in despair alongside my non-existent son.

Excellent! I love my commute for its audiobook potential. It's how I get my dose of historical scholarship.

Thank you for maintaining the appropriate etiquette, James. I'll hope for the Return of the King tomorrow.

Surely you'll help me out @bennewmark.bsky.social @jameshandscombe.bsky.social!

I assume you mean they're married to each other, rather than that their marital status is relevant more generally?

I really enjoyed reading this on my phone.

Of course. Good reasons. I loved German at school. Took it to A Level alongside French. As well as being great in and of itself I reckon it was the best way of learning how English works.
comment in response to post
Not a German teacher, obviously, just interested. What makes you keen?

Stop it Alex! There are things I'm better off not knowing about and this is one of them. I'm putting it in a category with Turkey teeth and mewing, knowledge of which has not made me a happier man!

I hate the world.

Not on Tik Tok but think I found the sort of thing you are on about. Why would anyone do that? Unhelpful to this year's students and invalidates use of paper for schools wanting to use it internally for next year's students!
comment in response to post
What do you mean? It's not a trend I've come across and I can't see why anyone would do this. Doesn't make sense to me unless I'm misunderstanding.

Very well done to you and the other authors! Funny that I got my copy before you!

Can see the appeal but it means I've only got just over two weeks before A Level results, so it's a no from me until somebody fixes that.
comment in response to post
The difficulty I have with it is that some of the best summer holidays I've had have involved getting away for best part of three weeks before A Level results - the only time I can get totally away from work. This means that can never happen. But as for Leicestershire, yeah that's totally weird!

The trouble is that any change involves inconveniencing schools or universities or both.

Does your school have a Sixth Form?
comment in response to post
If somebody's got a sensible plan to sort it out while fixing the mess of a university application system we have then I'm ready to listen.

Generally agree but I think in some subjects there's scope for cutting the amount of examined content (e.g. History) while simultaneously making it a more rigorous disciplinary qualification.
