I was stationed on Okinawa, MCAS Futenma. I could walk out of the barracks and see the Enlisted Club about 2 blocks away, 5 minute walk easy both ways. To go out into town, there was a hill with a 30 Degree slope downward, not hard to go out, but amazingly hard when returning to climb up it.
The hill road going up to the entrance of the base was a killer, I tried it once on a bike, Tried being the key word. Had a great view of the East China Sea Sunsets on the west side of the base (By the MARS Station).
I had it worse in Florence Italy - 10 minutes to the restaurant, 2 hours back to the hotel. Those Italians never understood we wanted a glass of wine, not a carafe. We didnβt complain though.
Two young guys in Rome go into a bar
"What does the Pope drink?"
Barman- "Creme de Menthe"
"Give us two pints thanks"
They wake up two days later shoeless,no wallets, sunburnt in a strange city.
"Well if that's what the pope drinks no wonder they carry him around in a big box on the back of a car"
