Really wish the PS2 slim had something similar ngl, like an external drive of some sort that the original JP launch PS2 had.

This was the first thing I did to my PS2 (well, the modern aftermarket SATA model). After jailbreaking the unit, the PC software is a little fiddly, but it's very convenient to play once it's set up.

The docs that came with the HDD advise using the vertical stand, as the extra weight makes the PS2 a bit top-heavy and more liable to tip without it.

I loved having the PS2 HDD. Just being able to dump saves onto it from my overworked memory card was fantastic, but running Resident Evil Outbreak File 1 & 2 on it was akin to a spiritual experience.

Oh heck yeah. I remember asking for the official Linux kit one year for Christmas. I never got it, but I remember reading reviews not long after saying it was a completely average experience. Neat idea though.

I did the hard drive thing in my PS2 a long time ago with FreeMCBoot and it's amazing.

At the time, there wasn't an easy way to get FreeMCBoot installed. Ended up finding a copy of HDLoader to get it done. It's an unlicensed disc that actually boots on a stock PS2...

Haven’t watched the video yet so not sure if you covered it or not: in the US, aside from FFXI, the HDD also had official support for Resident Evil Outbreak 1 & 2 and Street Fighter Alpha Anthology. With the latter, load times are virtually eliminated.

I didn't use the official PS2 hard drive, but a normal IDE drive and the HD Loader was magic. Reduced load times so much.

I had an external HDD mount so I could put double layer images on the drive from the PC, since it could only rip single layer discs.
