The scale-up is going to be what decides if this is the next big step. Currently we're looking at the demo battery being 22 microns thick, producing 100 microwatts. That doesn't scale up super-well for commercial use. But if they can get that right... dang.

So the good news is the beta emissions from Nickel-63 are--as far as I've read--not energetic enough to penetrate human skin, but could pose a health hazard if ingested (I've read it compared to tritium). If that's the case the shielding wouldn't need to be too great to provide significant safety
