the really wild thing is how many people insist that type advantage isn't considered in the anime when it's being mentioned constantly, either as "it was smart to choose this, t hey have an advantage" or "they're both neutral so it's an even match" or "why pick this? they're at a disadvantage"

There's definitely a couple that feel like ass pulls like 'aim for the horn' or 'thunder armour'. But most of the time it's just initiating exaggerated physics the way most shounen battles do. It's honestly fine.

Hell the manga also does this and it's sick.

there's a niche case every once in awhile but like most of the time but like...isn't this what pokemon battles are supposed to be like? it's why as the series went on and started to add in more of the game mechanics behidn the moves they got crazier with what that would be like in a REAL battle
