Not remotely what I was expecting, which was just a killer thriller. This is an examination of job rule and paranoia that's still relevant today.
Plus the killer is a huge fan of Manic Miner

As a very early sound film, it's fascinating how many scenes are silent. You'd think the footsteps or cars might be on the soundtrack but the silence is deliberate, shattered by a whistle or a revelation. And the tracking of the "M" is incredible.
