Since y'all are a lot more engaged in fandom that an i am, could someone explain to me what exactly counts as Pro-Shipping? I've always had issues with it being used as a general term, because i genuinely can't tell if people are talking about 'lolicon' shit, or shipping an uncomfortable age gap. - ThreadSky

proshipping includes supporting all ships regardless of nuance, and darkshipping is actively shipping those problematic pairings.

These discussions being held by what seem to be somewhat narrowly defined opposing 'teams' has always felt unhelpful to me, because you've got no sense of scale regarding what's being actually discusses when you come across it.

It is supposed to mean neither of those specifically, it is just a general term pro- as in opposed to the anti-shipping movement(s),which can mean either against non-canon shipping completely, or against specific ships or types of ships.

The general "older" fandom opinion on pro-shipping is more or less the old "ship and let ship" rules (which existed due to old "shipping war" drama, as well as anti-canon-shipping sentiments, especially mixed in with pre/early-2000s homophobia, but has recently expanded to include newer debates).

The recent debates since the 2000s have been about whether or not things like violence on shows & games affect reality, so anything portraying "abusive" fictional relationships is also part of the pro-shipping sentiments (this is also how people started conflating it with "problematic" shipping)

Combining all that with both the widening tolerance/acceptance of the diversity of sexuality portrayal & pushback against it, you end up with one word that can either mean "a specific ship or type of ship I dont approve of" or "a person that doesn't fictional abuse is the same as real life abuse"💀

I apologize for the long non answer; it's just mostly because the word has become so subjective to the person using it that, in the negative sense, people will use it to mean either of your examples, while someone else can be referring to neither at all but just a general "ship & let ship" sentiment

proshipping, as i use it, refers to shipping pairings which feature illegal/immoral/harmful aspects while not criticizing those aspects directly. i don't believe it to be wrong to write a work depicting a, for instance, abusive relationship, while deliberately pointing out how bad it is.

people are going to say any ship where negative things are present is pro ship. its best to avoid all discourse attached to it in claiming pro or anti. its used most often to bully people who use fiction/art to process trauma in any capacity.

some people genuinely use it to excuse extremely hating on ships which is weird (example; fluttercord which is fine to ship but people hate it). i generally use it as a “hey dont interact with me if you enjoy ships that have incest/pedophilia/bestiality/etc.” type of thing

That's a really bad way to phrase it, though. People are already harassed for they're ships. We don't need to add "illegal" on them because I have met people who legit thought people should go to prison for fanfics.
