i'm working on making it better but please remember that most of what you see in deck.blue was built by one person working in his free time (and it's my first ever web-app too) ivory has 3 people with much more experience working on apps like this since 2007

He was already pretending to not be directly involved in the first place. And every EM company ex-employee knows what a load of horse shit that is. He micromanages when things are going well and when they go to hell, he claims he "stepped back" so others take the fall. It's always been the case.

I know enough COBOL to never touch any of it. COBOL is old business process logic. Infrastructure things. Deep, ancient, foundational things. It is the old dark magic of programming. You don't mess with it unless you KNOW what you are doing. And you definitely don't push direct to prod!

I don't know how else to put this: This is fucking insane. NSF, a $10 billion grantmaking agency, is planning to lay off between a quarter and a half of its staff in the next two months.

Basically traps AI crawlers and sends them down an "infinite maze" of static files with no exit links, where they get stuck and thrash around for months. Once trapped, the crawlers can be fed gibberish data, aka Markov babble, which is designed to poison AI models arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...

I built an OSINT tool called TGeocoder that enables you to quickly parse Telegram news channels to extract key event information, and then geocode each event found within the messages to specific lat/lon coordinates. This data can then be plotted on an interactive map. github.com/MJCruickshan...

It seems ill advised to launch a major new surface for platform harm like Trending Topics when there are already a number of other existing harms that need to be addressed

this is one of the major downsides of the current structure of the PDS. This would have to be implemented within individual appviews but they are against implementing it (or rather, implementing a proper structure which allows for it) in the PDS itself which is......ehhh....it's not ideal

hello hello hello SO this might sound VERY BORING but if you're on Bluesky I'm guessing you're not a fan of Massive Platforms Owned by Billionaires. It's about to get much harder to run any sort of online community in the UK, unless you do it on a platform like Facebook, WhatsApp, Discord, etc

I wrote about Bluesky's messy L'affaire Jesse Singal. This post also contains a pretty good recipe for spicy butternut squash soup. little-flying-robots.ghost.io/bluesky-gets...

I’m really hoping that the Romanian election was suspended out of an abundance of caution and not because social media bots boosting posts actually had a major effect on the potential outcome, because if they did, every democracy is completely cooked.

#BadActorBingo note for the morning: the last few days have seen an increase in accounts that automate "Reply Guys as a service" by pulling random posts and having ChatGPT write a comment that superficially agrees but pivots to trying to start a fight halfway through.

The major downside of the mass adoption of bluesky is the influx of gpt reply accounts which bring it back down to xitters level of "disappointing noisy social media experience" and i can't help but tinfoil hat about it lol

Even during the usenet days, we'd long established (legally) that public availability =/= public domain. There's many different ways to split hairs over what constitutes "usage" and redistribution but conflating public accessibility & public domain has never had solid legal standing

As many of you following main might know @hf.co released 1M posts scraped from the @bsky.app Firehose API. It was a mess. People got angry, and I thought -- #privacydisaster. So I decided to write about it. insights.priva.cat/p/privacy-di... Let's unpack this a bit... 👇

can I code fast? no. but can I code well? also no. but does my code work? alas, no

a controversial response to the growing "reply guy" problem

I can already see the arguments misusing these results to defend to usage of untuned LLMs as credible primary/secondary sources of information, and already getting a headache about it...

This is good opsec in general

LRP: This is quite similar to the writing on the wall re: the X Truth Soc merger as well; I am curious to see how common this will become for social media acquisitions/mergers.

I don't know how I feel about the current meta of bsky verification through individual labeler/badges tbh, even as a big fan of decentralization. It seems as if this solution would not reach those most at risk of being bamboozled by false accounts.

Just a gentle reminder for OSINT peeps : #gephi has a BlueSky plugin. https://gephi.org/plugins/#/plugin/bluesky-gephi Proudly made by my good friend @totetmatt.fr ❤️

While Bluesky looks like other social apps on the surface, it’s actually quite different. It’s an open network. I blogged about it here:
