If you are going to be angry, be angry the spam cartels have managed to divert so much money that people want to go to aiding Gazans into supporting human trafficking! And, of course, angry at the crisis that means pretending to be a Gazan in need is a successful tactic for them to engage in.

As I first said a year ago, if a site allows any relaxation of spam enforcement for what they consider a good cause, the organized worldwide spam industry will instantly pivot to exploiting that good cause, and that is precisely what has happened, both on Bluesky and on other sites.

Like don't get me wrong, at this point I still heavily root for atproto for many reasons but activitypub at least has a more suitable structure for servers to implement forced unfollows (hell, lots of servers straight up have a "make this account unfollow me" button) and that is far more ideal ux

This is like my favorite form of entertainment but when I point it out to friends they don't seem as amused as I am. Also when bot accounts get the identity makeover but leave up all their old posts; comedy gold...

Fundamentally, Mastodon is built by people who think that humans are rational actors who respond to reason and obey rules and Bluesky is built by people who know that has never once been true, ever

Great for data though

Wait, if you're prone to falling down wiki rabbit holes (meee lmao) then maybe dont click those links (especially if you've got work to do) hahahah

It's interesting because it can be referring to almost completely different things depending on positive or negative context; you kinda have to just use context clues to tell😅 There's some good Fanlore.org articles on the history of the terms fanlore.org/wiki/Pro-shi... fanlore.org/wiki/Anti-sh...

But in recent years, it became more about opposing abusive relationships (enemy shipping, age/power dynamic gaps, etc) which was when younger fandom folks started confusing it for "problematic" ships lol It's this continued part of the "violent shows/video games cause violence" argument more or less
comment in response to post
But you're right it essentially started from that; in the old days there were "fandom wars" about ships or shipping in general, so anti-ship people either opposed shipping entirely or specific types. When I was younger, the whole opposing "non-canon" ships thing was just code for "no gay ships" lol

It's essentially "pro" as in opposing of "anti" shippers, which is when parts of a fandom oppose either shipping in general (as in non-canon relationships) or specific types of ships deemed problematic (depending on who you ask, this can mean anything from lgbtq ships to abusive or incestuous ships)

It's true that decentralized media doesn't HAVE to enforce its own dev guidelines but it makes a serious case against itself by not doing so. Mass adoption is one thing but with little time for platform/protocol loyalty, people will immediately drop bsky.social for the alternative that does lol

It seems wild to me that this would need clarification, especially to fans of this particular series...😅

I apologize for the long non answer; it's just mostly because the word has become so subjective to the person using it that, in the negative sense, people will use it to mean either of your examples, while someone else can be referring to neither at all but just a general "ship & let ship" sentiment
comment in response to post
Combining all that with both the widening tolerance/acceptance of the diversity of sexuality portrayal & pushback against it, you end up with one word that can either mean "a specific ship or type of ship I dont approve of" or "a person that doesn't fictional abuse is the same as real life abuse"💀

The recent debates since the 2000s have been about whether or not things like violence on shows & games affect reality, so anything portraying "abusive" fictional relationships is also part of the pro-shipping sentiments (this is also how people started conflating it with "problematic" shipping)
comment in response to post
The general "older" fandom opinion on pro-shipping is more or less the old "ship and let ship" rules (which existed due to old "shipping war" drama, as well as anti-canon-shipping sentiments, especially mixed in with pre/early-2000s homophobia, but has recently expanded to include newer debates).

That's true wisdom right there hahaha My deal is that I can't determine how to respond to "AI is terrible!/fantastic!" statements without knowing what specifically someone is referring to bc my response could be either "oh yeah I agree" or "well, now, slow down a second..."
comment in response to post
It is supposed to mean neither of those specifically, it is just a general term pro- as in opposed to the anti-shipping movement(s),which can mean either against non-canon shipping completely, or against specific ships or types of ships. fanlore.org/wiki/Pro-shi...

The biggest issue I have is with the term "AI" itself, as an umbrella term for way too many vastly different concepts & practices... I try to use qualifiers as much as possible in conversation, but it's still difficult...

If you follow a single other feed (there are ones that are just more specific versions of your Following feed) it'll go away. The Mutuals and Quiet Posters feeds are good honed versions of the Following feed.

Theres a LOT of incoming noise but one good thing about the current setup of bluesky is that(for now) the noise is relatively easy to filter out especially if you're using ur shitdar lol (like, if a viral post just sounds a liiittle too much like what conservatives think liberals post like? Lmao...)
