there is no significant ideologically liberal population in this country. the democrats are a center right party representing the interests of the urban educated professional class

One reason why Trumpism has succeeded is that the right has come to recognize that the putative commitments many people have to liberalism are actually extremely thin and fake and, as far as elites are concerned, actually deployed instrumentally against constituencies the right also hates.
