The point about civilians is idiotic- the detonations were clearly valid under subsection a) and precautions were taken to limit risk to civilians by making them remotely detonated rather than time bombs or triggered by the person using them!
The pagers were remotely detonated. From what the Ukrainians have said these blow up when they're on your face and turned on, not at a specific command.
As a person that plays an international lawyer on the internet I would argue these (sound like) objects made to explode; not an explosive made to look like a common object
Which you can argue is a thin difference, it’s what this rule was meant for. They don’t want something a kid is attracted to
I agree it couldn't have happened to nicer guys, but "because fuck 'em" is not a great way to evaluate the legality of something. At least of things that don't involve UHC CEOs.
It’s not a straight “because fuck em” but I fully believe that the Geneva Suggestions are a “gentleman’s agreement” and if one side breaks it you shouldn’t be held to it. Especially when it’s on your land, if they win, they are the ones that will have to clean up the mess.
If someone put a bomb under a car it wouldn’t necessarily violate this. If you left out what looked like chocolate bars, they explode when someone touches it, it would.

I'm not crying over spilled Putinists, it's that this type of attack is a race to the bottom that will result in Bad Things Happening More Often.
