At times, it reminds me a bit of some novels by David Lodge that I used to read. He would seem to describe, deconstruct and almost subvert the literary forms he was using.
(I have next to no literary knowledge or understanding, so please excuse my ignorance! I'm more of a numbers guy.)

Great book. Have just re-read Bournville and now re-visiting Middle England which seems so relevant given the events of the past week or so.
