There's no such thing as a game-deciding call. There's 100 possessions in a game and each one has just as much impact in the final result. Focusing on the final few plays ignores the bad possessions a team has beforehand.

If the team makes less mistakes throughout a game, a call won't matter

That’s a reductive semantic argument that no one who watches sports would agree with. If a ref blows a call on the last play of the game that would have changed the outcome, that’s a game deciding call in the eyes of 99% of the viewers.

I watch sports and have never once felt that one call by an official has decided a game. It's convenient to blame that because it m and you don't have to criticise what your own team did or didn't do prior to it.

It's also wrong. It's recency bias.

A missed FT in the first quarter is just as impactful on the final result as a missed FT in the fourth. Same as a foul call.

Game needs to feel more like a game. Anybody that's played street ball can tell you some calls go your way and others don't. We spend too much time reviewing fouls now, and it makes the game a worse product to watch. Make the call and move on. Basketball should be a game that flows.

It depends on the group. I think games should be fun, even if you lose. That's what it means to love the game. Fairness is a part of the fun, too, but petty arguments definitely take away from the fun.

Yes, we should expect refs to make the right call, but everyone makes mistakes sometimes, and even after all the slow motion camera tricks, some fans will still be upset with calls. I agree with OP: play better earlier so that the game doesn't come down to a single call.

I have sympathy for refs missing marginal calls, but they also don't get benched for repeatedly making mistakes or swinging games with sudden shifts in what's allowable.

Some games are gonna be close and as a fan it sucks when the teams aren't deciding it.

It is so aggravating to hear/see/read… being a ref is hard, it is not going to get called correctly every time. And no amount of process “fixes it”.

Player don’t make 100% of their free throws. It’s hard! Sports are hard!

Mistakes are part of it. if it was perfect it wouldn’t be sports
