all it would take for a single network engineer to ruin part of the economy is just deleting historical config backups of key routers and then deleting all bgp configuration on those routers

We can go back. All it would take are a few network engineers in strategic positions. We gave this whole Internet thing a shot and it didn't quite work out, no biggie.

It's good to think about these things and expose the vulnerabilities before the bad guys do. If only we can coordinate efforts to patch them before they're exploited.

But if they are exploited, at the very least we can say that the bad guys were unoriginal.
