Last week, 75 Dems (Durbin/Markey/Waters led) urged Cardona/Biden to process remaining borrower-defense applications. Believe it or not, the Ed Dept knows which schools defrauded borrowers—they have an entire list.
They know the schools that committed fraud.
They know which borrowers attended those schools (and were defrauded.
There is NO reason to withhold blanket releases from loans to those schools.
There should be no need to know the “secret handshake”, or “say the magic words”.
It's absurd that people in their 60s, 70s and 80s+ have student debt. Their loans are often 20+ or 30+ years old. That means they're literally illegal. Biden should cancel debt of older borrowers before Trump takes over. These accounts are riddled with errors.
They already announced they're going to do something with PSLF. As for IDR, there are folks who have paid for 20 or 25 years—the legal requirement for some IDR programs—and yet still have a balance. They are legally entitled to relief and are just waiting.
