The Soviet proverb is, "The future is certain, but the past is unpredictable." A propagandist can choose what future story they will tell, but that means they have to keep changing the past to fit with the ever changing new narratives. They knew the power and peril of revisionism better than anyone.

The erasure of the Jan. 6 records comes while the administration is also seeking to whitewash the teaching of U.S. history, threatening to withhold funds from schools that teach about America’s troubled history of racial and gender discrimination.
