I have not seen that performance--but maybe there's just something to seeing a theater actor in the flesh. I like this better than Orson Welles' interpretation of the character in Chimes at Midnight (a movie I love), so that's saying something!

Beale played Falstaff full of pathos which made the betrayal by Hal all the more painful in I and in Part II made him have a real character journey rather than being solely the comic relief. Highly recommend.

I respect the breadth of your viewing, because that one completely sailed by me! Yes, he's a real one. I saw him on Purlie Victorious on Broadway last year & he was again one of the high points of the show (which was excellent all around).

It was called For Richer for Poorer from 1997, the last year I was writing about movies. Sort of a reverse Witness comedy. Jay O played an Amish farmer. When you work on a central PA newspaper you have to review any Amish film!

I met him when he was recording an audiobook, and he was the most affable man. And I got to tell him how much I loved "Tumbleweeds" and the perfection that are all of the performances. Thus endeth my Jay O. Sanders story :-)
