The secret is to make sure the grown-ups get foam swords as well.

I made my nephew an entire set of Ninja Turtles weapons out of pool noodles, but made sure my stepbrother had a shield and flanged mace to fight back.

I think you should have made a Shredder gauntlet, to complete the set. That way, "Dad" gets to be the badguy while the kid gets to play hero. Then they can switch.
